Chapter 15 ~ Deklan
By the time we arrived back at my truck, forty-five minutes later, the majority of my anger had evaporated, but I still didnât want to talk. Instead, I wanted to put myself into my happy place and forget about Sky for a little while.
Easier said than done since she was sitting right beside me, but I did manage to do it. At first, I focused on driving to get us heading home, and then I went over some things from work that I needed to consider how to handle, but I didnât feel like thinking about work. Instead, I tried to remember some of the photographs that I had taken earlier in the day, and my memory kept recalling the series at the top of the mountain where Sky had held her arms out wide.
Man, I wanted to paint that. I wanted to get that picture up on my big computer monitor and then take out my easel and my oil paints, and I wanted to transition that photograph to canvas. If my memory served me right, it wouldnât even need that many tweaks to complete the picture.
For most of the ride home, I was so focused on how I would paint it that I already had the brushes and the paint tubes that I would need lined up in my mind. It was going to be too late to do it tonight, as I needed daylight to paint. I could paint at night, but the colors always looked different, so I preferred to paint during the day which meant I had to wait until this weekend.
It was a good thing that I didnât have plans this weekend because now I did. I was pretty sure that if I had had plans, I would have mysteriously gotten sick and would have had to back out.
I didnât mean to be rude to Sky when I left, but I was still smarting from what sheâd said at the top of Hawk Mountain. She didnât want me to be part of her life, she was rather obvious, and I had to stop being stupid about it. Yeah, probably she would have slept with me, in fact, I was pretty sure she would have, but she didnât want a relationship.
Thatâs where we were different. I didnât want to sleep with her just to get my rocks off. If I was going to take her to my bed and make love to her, it was because I had every intention of building a future with her.
I could have been nicer when I left her, but I was hurting, and I guess I wanted her to both know that and maybe feel a little bit of my pain. Was that fair? Maybe not, but love wasnât fair.
After I arrived home, I took a few moments to say hello to Pico and then put my stuff away, cleaned out the cooler, and grabbed a beer as I kicked back on the sofa and looked at my cellphone for the first time all afternoon.
